As per a report from the Evening Standard, Manchester United could reignite their pursuit of Leicester City defender Harry Maguire this summer.
Maguire’s Man United links
Foxes’ star stopper Maguire has been plying his trade at the King Power Stadium for two seasons now.
After making the move from Hull City in the summer of 2017, Maguire’s impressive showings at the heart of Leicester’s back-4 over the course of his debut campaign, coupled with his stellar performances at the World Cup in Russia, quickly led to rumours that the 26-year-old was being eyed by a number of the Premier League’s top clubs.
Of the sides touted as potential destinations, Manchester United were the most persistently-linked with actually tabling an offer for Maguire, with it having been common knowledge that Jose Mourinho was on the lookout for defensive reinforcements.
In the end, however, a move never came to fruition.
Old Trafford bound?
As per the aforementioned update from the Evening Standard, though, the Red Devils are ready to reignite their pursuit of Maguire upon the opening of the upcoming summer transfer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, like Mourinho, is said to be a keen admirer of the powerful stopper’s talents.
In addition, it is claimed that United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has given the go-ahead to the club’s plan to break their transfer record on the signing of a world-class central-defender.
As per the Standard’s report:
‘Woodard accepts that’s (a record-breaking fee) what it will take to dramatically improve their rearguard after a series of relatively cut-price additions in that department over the past decade.’
