Man United come up well short in opening bid for Jerome Boateng

As per a report from Christian Falk of SportBild this evening, Manchester United have seen an offer for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng rejected by the Bundesliga powerhouse.

Boateng, 29, has been on the books of the Bavarian giants since 2011, when he made the move back to Germany from Manchester City following just a solitary campaign at the Etihad.

And Boateng has since gone on to establish himself as one of the finest central defenders in world football, racking up 6 Bundesliga titles, 3 German Cups and a Champions League crown since his his return to the Allianz Arena.

As such, despite his still-crucial role in the backline of the Bavarians, mounting reports that the former Hamburg man could be available for the right price this summer have come as something of a surprise.

Boateng himself did little to dampen the rumours that he could be set for an exit from Bavaria following Bayern’s Champions League semi-final elimination at the hands of Real Madrid back in May, when he explained:

‘I experienced everything at FC Bayern.’

‘So now I certainly reach a point where I have to answer certain questions to myself: ‘What goals do I have that I did not reach yet? Do I want to prove myself always at the same club and always under the same circumstances?’

‘This is a question of personal challenges. It is not about classical career questions, but about questions for your life.’

The two clubs most heavily-touted as potential destinations for Boateng to this point have been Manchester United and PSG, with outlets in the French media over the last couple of weeks having suggested that the latter had already agreed personal terms with the German.

To this point, though, there has reportedly been little progress made towards a finalised deal between PSG and Bayern, with a report from the reliable Christian Falk over the weekend having revealed that United have now re-emerged as contenders for Boateng:

Knocked back

However, after it was revealed earlier today that Boateng himself would prefer a move to PSG, Christian Falk has this evening provided a further update, revealing that Manchester United’s first bid for the German has come up well short of Bayern’s asking price.

The Red Devils are said to have offered just 25 million Euro for Boateng, with Bayern known to be holding out for a fee of around 50 million Euro:
