Man United chiefs have held talks with Cavani as they attempt to convince him to stay

Cavani’s mixed Man United stint

Manchester United signed Edinson Cavani on a free transfer during the delayed summer window, a piece of business which looked quite the bargain.

The Uruguayan had of course previously been plying his trade with Ligue 1 powerhouse PSG. And, despite now being 34, Cavani has since proven himself to be a very useful signing for United – up until the last month or so at least.

Albeit whilst having spent much of his first season at Old Trafford as an impact sub, the South American has already scored several key goals for the Manchester outfit.

For example, his haul of two goals and an assist against Southampton back in November saw the Red Devils come from behind to secure a 3-2 win.

Over recent weeks, though, the forward has missed a number of outings due to fitness issues.

And whilst such an absence is of course perfectly normal, it has been claimed that Man United’s staff have become frustrated with Cavani’s lay-off, as medical officials are said to have cleared the Uruguayan to play in some of the games he has opted to sit out.

This proved one of the main reasons behind the Manchester Evening News‘ suggestion that the club were uncertain about extending Cavani’s contract.

Man United hold talks with Cavani

Now, though, a recent report from the Daily Mail has provided information which suggests the Manchester powerhouse are in fact keen to see Cavani stay put.

It is claimed that director of football John Murtough and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward held talks with the hitman on Tuesday, as they attempt to convince him to stay.

Cavani has been linked with a potential return to South America of late, after his father suggested that his son is not 100 per cent happy in England.

Nevertheless, the Mail claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is insistent that he wants Cavani to remain, albeit whilst having conceded that the final decision rests with the former PSG man.
