Valencia impressing his manager
Signed from Wigan Athletic back in 2009, Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia now finds himself to be the regular right back at Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho praised the 31-year-old Ecuadorian ahead of tonight’s Europa League game against Feyenoord.
“I am not surprised by his form this season,” Mourinho told MUTV. “He has been clean of injuries, save for an operation on his arm which did not keep him out for long, and I have also been able to keep him fresh by resting him in certain Europa League games.
“I think he is the right-back to give us the maximum we can in terms of our attacking football.”
Mourinho tried to sign him in Madrid
Jose Mourinho was in charge at Real Madrid for three years and claims he always saw the potential of playing Antonio Valencia at right back.
The former Real Madrid coach claims he approached Manchester United but was firmly told no.
“I tried to sign Antonio a number of years ago, when I was at Madrid.”
“Even though he was not playing right-back at the time, I thought he could be phenomenal in that position. As it was, United told me ‘no chance!'”
