Could Man United secure his signature?
Manchester United and Barcelona are reportedly leading the race to sign Ajax’s young star Matthijs de Ligt, after Bayern Munich dropped out of the running.
Matthijs de Ligt’s name has been on the lips of most football fans over the past couple of months.
The 19-year-old’s rise has been incredible, ever since making his debut back in September 2016.
His first taste of European competition came when Ajax made it to the final of the Europa League in the 2016/17 season.
He featured in the clash with Manchester United, but found himself on the losing side.
Despite that loss, de Ligt’s stock has only risen since then, especially after this past season.
The Dutch defender captained Ajax and guided them to the Champions League semi-finals.
Now, every elite club in football is seemingly trying to sign him, but there are two leading the chase.
Battle of the giants
According to ESPN, Manchester United and Barcelona are leading the race to sign de Ligt.
They claim ‘Manchester United and Barcelona are thought to be leading the chase for the Netherlands international, while Juventus are also interested.‘
One club who won’t be challenging Man United, Barcelona or Juventus for de Ligt are Bayern Munich.
ESPN claim that ‘Bayern Munich have withdrawn from the race to sign Matthijs de Ligt, a source close to the club has told ESPN FC.’
The German giants have reportedly informed de Ligt that ‘more pressing priorities in the transfer market ruled out a bid for him.’
