Manchester United are set to offer Benfica £31m for Bryan Cristante.
The midfielder is currently on loan at Atlanta and has been very impressive for the Italians.
Jose Mourinho has identified the 22-year-old as the man he wishes to replace Marouane Fellaini with.
On loan at Atalanta
Currently, the Italian midfielder is on loan at Atalanta.
He played a big role in helping the Italians reach the knockout stage of the Europa League scoring on three occasions.
The 22-year-old has also impressed in Serie A, netting five times in 12 appearances.
Cristante has been predominantly deployed as a central midfielder but has also impressed when playing in the 10-role.
Dealing with Atalanta
Coming up through the youth ranks at AC Milan, Cristante joined Benfica back in 2014.
Part of the deal which saw the player join Atalanta included a £10m option to purchase at the end of the season.
It means that shoulder United swoop for Cristante, they will have to meet the demands of the Serie A club.
They are understood to value the player at £31m.
The Belgian midfielder is set to leave Old Trafford in the summer when he contract expires.
The 31-year-old has been refusing to sign a new deal and has offered very little signs that he will sign a new one.
Mourinho has already expressed his concern over Fellaini’s situation:
“Yes, I am (worried Fellaini will leave on a free transfer).
It’s a discussion between the player and the board.
I’m not involved in contracts in deals, and I respect both, I respect the player because he has the right, has the right to decide his future.
I respect the board because the decisions and the discussions are under control so I just wait wishing they will have an understanding but it’s out of my control.”
The Portuguese coach has therefore been searching for replacements for the former Everton man, with Cristante’s name being placed high on the list.
