Man City’s Mendy recounts the Monaco exodus that started with Silva

“It was like dominos falling”

Manchester City star and former Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy has explained how it was at the French club as their team began to fall apart.

The Frenchman was one of many players who left the Ligue 1 champions for new pastures during the summer transfer window.

His transfer cost Manchester City in the region of £53million as he became one of the most expensive transfers in Premier League history.

Though, in an exclusive interview with the Telegraph, Mendy has been speaking of the Monaco summer exodus in which several star players left.

First was teammate Bernardo Silva who was the first to leave the French giants before Mendy, Tiémoué Bakayoko and Kylian Mbappe all left.

Thomas Lemar also came close to leaving on deadline day after the club accepted a bid from Arsenal but the player was less than keen on making the move.

Now, Mendy has been recounting the time in which Bernardo Silva informed his former colleagues that he would be leaving for the Premier League.

“The rest of us were on holiday when we suddenly got this round-robin photo from him signing for Manchester City,” he explained.

“It was a surprise because he was the only one who had never said where he was going or what his plans were!”

“And then he knocked us all over with that picture – ‘I’ve done it, here I am'”.

“After that, it was like dominos falling.”

Gundogan update

One former Manchester City summer signing has not seen his career start as well as Benjamin Mendy.

That comes in the form of Ilkay Gundogan who had been out with an injury for the past 11 months.

Now, following an injury setback against West Brom, there has been an update on his fitness.

Find out what that update is here.
