Gundogan’s time at City

Ilkay Gundogan joined Manchester City in 2016, moving from German outfit, Borussia Dortmund.

In his three seasons in Manchester, Gundogan has earned 115 appearances for the club.

In those 115 games, Gundogan has scored 17 and assisted 17.

The German has also won a plethora of trophies, the latest of which came in the form of the 2019 Community Shield.

Man City beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties to lift the trophy on Sunday, with Gundogan having played 29 minutes after coming on as a sub.

Gundogan set for fresh deal

Gundogan’s current Man City deal is set to run out in July 2020.

Should Gundogan not sign a new deal, the Citizens could be set to lose him on a free transfer next summer, with foreign clubs allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with the midfielder as early as January 2020.

Gundogan and City look to have been in discussions over a new deal for some time now, with the Manchester Evening News having reported in July that Gundogan was playing hardball over an extension.

However, City have apparently made a breakthrough in negotiations.

According to the Mirror, Gundogan will sign a new deal with the Citizens in the next two weeks.

When asked about his contract situation after the Community Shield, Gundogan stated:

“If you stay patient for another couple of weeks you will know – we will see.

“Every situation is different and individual. Everyone has to take a decision for himself. These kind of decisions sometimes take a little bit of time.

“During last season I asked people to be patient because it’s a decision you make for the next few years.

“That’s why I was calm and relaxed and still am. It’s a comfortable situation for me at the moment.” As quoted by the Mirror.
