Man City’s Ederson believes ‘6-7 sides’ will be in Premier League title race this season

Man City vs Liverpool

Manchester City and Liverpool are set to go head-to-head later this afternoon, in the weekend’s marquee Premier League fixture.

Liverpool began the weekend sitting top of the English top-flight, but had since seen all of Southampton, Tottenham and Leicester, in that order, move clear at the summit.

As for Manchester City, they have endured quite a rough start to the season, which currently sees them languishing in the bottom half of the table.

Granted, the Sky Blues have played one or two games less than the majority of the Premier League’s clubs, but a number of their displays have nevertheless been concerning.

Ederson on 2020/21 Premier League title race

In seasons gone by, today’s fixture has come as a battle between the top two teams in England.

Liverpool, of course, won the league last time out, with City second.

The season prior, meanwhile, saw Pep Guardiola’s men emerge victorious, with Liverpool just a point behind.

Ahead of Sunday’s showdown, though, City no.1 Ederson has voiced the opinion that the campaign ahead will see the title race expand beyond two teams, to potentially as many as six or seven:

“This is not a usual season, the teams out of the ‘Big Six’ have all started well.

“Aston villa, Everton and Southampton have all shown good performances lately. They have a lot of quality players and they’ve all had a good pre-season to start at the highest level.

“This year it will be different, it will be tighter, and I think the title race won’t between two teams, but six or seven sides.”
