Chelsea after Man City
Following Sunday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Man City, one of the accusations levelled at Chelsea is that the ‘inmates are running the asylum’.
Chelsea’s League Cup final loss will forever be remembered for the clash between Kepa Arrizabalaga and the Blues management.
Maurizio Sarri had tried to sub his keeper just before the penalty shootout at Wembley, however Kepa refused to go off.
It’s since been revealed that in the laws of the game, players can refuse to be substituted.
However, the main upshot of the Kepa incident is to question where the power lies at Stamford Bridge.
Marina Granovskaia & Kepa Arrizabalaga
The general narrative surrounding the Blues is as follows.
Sarri has lost control over his dressing room, as signified by the whole Kepa incident.
The upshot is that player power is paramount at Stamford Bridge.
However that picture is spoiled in the Times on Wednesday, as Marina Granovskaia’s reaction to the whole Kepa incident is revealed.
Marina Granovskaia is Chelsea’s director of football, and arguably the most powerful women in the English game.
The Times report that Marina Granovskaia has been appalled by Kepa’s behaviour:
(Sarri has received) the backing of the club, most notably Marina Granovskaia, a key director.
Sarri and Granovskaia spoke after the game and agreed to discipline Kepa, although there were no reassurances over the coach’s own future in the job.
Kepa released a brief statement on Sunday evening in which he claimed that his actions had been misunderstood. Granovskaia and the rest of the Chelsea board deemed this to be insufficient. The 24-year-old therefore issued a fuller apology late on Monday night.
Following this disclosure, is it fair to say that Marina Granovskaia is actually the person in charge in west London?
Will Kepa Arrizabalaga start vs Tottenham?
Chelsea host Tottenham in the Premier League tonight.
It remains unclear whether Kepa Arrizabalaga will start in goal against Spurs.
🗣 "We don't want to kill him!"@ChelseaFC boss Maurizio Sarri insists the situation involving @kepa_46 has been dealt with but admits the goalkeeper could be dropped for tomorrow's clash with @SpursOfficial 🤯
