England win on penalties
History was made at the World Cup on Tuesday night.
England won a World Cup penalty shootout!
Colombia were beaten 4-3 in the shootout as the Three Lions booked their spot in the quarter-finals.
England took the lead through a second half Harry Kane penalty, but in the 93rd minute Yerry Mina scored a dramatic equaliser from a corner.
But England didn’t buckle. The game went to extra time, then a shootout, where Jordan Pickford and Eric Dier became national heroes.
England vs Sweden
England will now face Sweden on Saturday in the last eight.
That match will be played at 3pm UK time on Saturday in Samara.
But what state will the England squad be in for that game?
Following the Colombia victory, England are sweating over the fitness of three key players.
Man City & Tottenham stars
Tottenham’s duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli plus Man City’s Kyle Walker are all injury doubts for Sweden.
The Times have reported the following on Wednesday morning:
Gareth Southgate said that the England dressing room was like a “scene from M*A*S*H” with several key players needing fitness checks before Saturday’s quarter-final with Sweden.
Dele Alli and Kyle Walker were substituted before England triumphed on penalties, while the captain Harry Kane appeared to end a watershed night for the national team in discomfort.
Will this trio be fit for the Sweden? England fans will be hoping that the four days rest before Saturday will be enough time for these issues to be rectified.
