Man City set a pair of Premier League records in Newcastle hammering

Manchester City’s comprehensive victory over Newcastle United this evening saw the Citizens set a pair of Premier League records.

City run riot

Pep Guardiola’s men welcomed the Magpies to the Etihad a short time ago.

City headed into the clash in search of a bounce-back performance and result, having fallen to a shock defeat at the hands of Southampton last time out.

As such, it came as little surprise when, aided by a weakened Newcastle XI, the Sky Blues simply blew Steve Bruce’s outfit out of the water.

An utterly dominant performance eventually saw City emerge with a 5-0 victory.

Gabriel Jesus put the Manchester giants on their way inside 10 minutes, before Riyad Mahrez quickly added a 2nd.

Federico Fernandez’s unfortunate own goal then essentially put City out of sight on the hour mark, before further strikes from David Silva and Raheem Sterling rounded out a comfortable evening’s work for Guardiola and co.

Record setters

As well as getting themselves back to winning ways, City’s drubbing of Newcastle also proved significant for the Sky Blues from a historic standpoint.

As outlined above, in putting the Magpies to the sword, the former Premier League champions actually became the new owners of a pair of Premier League records.

First, after Riyad Mahrez took his league goalscoring tally for the season to 10 with his first-half strike this evening, the Citizens established themselves as the first club in the Premier League era to have 5 different players reach double digits across a single campaign:

In addition, following the full-time whistle at the Etihad, it was revealed that City had completed an incredible 93.7% of their 840 attempted passes over the course of the 90 minutes.

This also marks a Premier League record, as the highest percentage of completed passes in a single fixture since such data became available in 2003:
