According to a report from Spanish outlet Don Balon, Premier League leaders Manchester City are preparing a sizeable offer for Barcelona star Sergio Busquets.
Busquets, a vastly experienced 29-year-old deep-lying midfielder, has been with Barcelona for his whole career to date, having come up through the club’s youth system, making his debut in 2008.
He has long been regarded as one of world football’s finest midfielders, with the 102-time capped Spanish international having added a defensive tenacity to his world-class abilities on the ball over recent years.
It was reported during the summer that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola had informed the Citizens of his keenness to reunite with his former charge, though nothing ever came of such rumours.
However, as per the aforementioned report from Don Balon this morning, Guardiola is now ready to lodge an official offer for Busquets, who he views as the ideal addition to his side’s midfield ranks.
City are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park, with Yaya Toure beginning to show his age in a major way and Ilkay Gundogan struggling to stay fit for extended periods.
Fernandinho and Kevin De Bruyne have proven a brilliant tandem at the base of the Citizens’ engine room to this point in the campaign, but with the former set to turn 33 next year, Guardiola is ready to showcase his side’s financial muscle once more with a rumoured offer of 56 million Euro for Busquets.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona would even consider such a bid, though, with the release clause in Busquets’ contract sitting at 200 million Euro and the Spaniard still proving an integral member of Ernesto Valverde’s Blaugrana squad.
