Man City official sparks hope club could sign Messi next summer: ‘I think we have the financial strength’

Don’t go

The early portion of the summer window was dominated by the news Barcelona talisman and worldwide superstar Lionel Messi wanted to leave Catalonia. The Argentine had grown frustrated by the club’s direction and felt his time had come to an end.

Eventually, Messi was forced to stay as La Liga supported Barcelona in their right to a fee should Messi leave. Barcelona adamantly stated they would only part ways with the Argentine for his approximate £630 million release clause.

However, it looked briefly as if Manchester City would reunite Messi with his former coach Pep Guardiola. The 33-year-old has continued to look the player he always was and has scored once and claimed 2 assists in Barca’s opening 3 games.

A Barcelona without Lionel Messi is hard to picture. The period prior to his arrival was successful with players like Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o leading the club to the Champions League win in 2006.

Barca have an expensive squad but comparatively, not the level of the dominant Catalan side that preceded their Argentine captain.

The dream

The Premier League could yet still be graced by Messi’s arrival. Speaking with Manchester Evening News, Manchester City’s Chief Operating Officer Omar Berrada spoke on the possibility of signing Messi.

“I think any club in the world would like to explore the possibility of him joining their team,” Berrada remarked.

“The fact that it was commented that he wanted to come to play for City just shows you how far the team has come over the last years where the best talent of his generation and potentially saying he wants to come and play for us.”

Berrada didn’t outright confirm they would go back for Messi. However, he reassured supporters they have the capability to do so.

“For every single position we have to be prepared because there can be so many things that can happen but at the same time I think we have the financial strength and system ability to make that investment when required.”

The dream is still alive to see Messi move to England to ply his trade outside of Spain.
