Man City, Man United & Wolves might not be able to host Champions League & Europa League home ties

UK to bring in two-week quarantine for travellers

On Saturday, the Times reported on their front page that all travellers are set to face two-week quarantine measures when they enter the UK.

Perhaps the bigger question is how has the UK not implemented such travel restrictions already?

The UK has the second-highest number of fatalities in the world from Covid-19: 31,662 (data here).

On Sunday night (7pm UK time), Prime Minister Boris Johnson is poised to unveil the latest round of instructions over lockdown measures in Britain.

As part of these measures, Johnson is set to confirm this travel ban.

For the record, the quarantine measures are set to be imposed on all air travellers, plus anyone who arrives into the UK at a port.

How can Man City, Man United & Wolves host Champions League & Europa League home ties?

On August 7, Man City are due to play Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 second-leg.

Man City won the first-leg of the tie 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Wolves remain in the hat for the 2019-20 Europa League.

Man United are 5-nil up against Austrian side LASK in their last-16 tie, while the Red Devils are set to play their second-leg at Old Trafford.

As for Wolves, they are scheduled to host Greek side Olympiacos at Molineux in the UEL. Wolves drew 1-1 in the away leg.

However, if the UK travel restrictions are implemented, Man City, Man United and Wolves may all be prevented from hosting these European ties as their opponents won’t be able to manage the logistics.

What are the options for Man City, Man United & Wolves?

The most logical solution is to accept that Man City, Man United and Wolves won’t be able to play these home games.

To fulfil these fixtures, the Premier League trio could be forced into finding a location on the continent, or further afield, to stage these European ties.

Alternatively, the UK government could relax their travel bans for these specific events.

However, the problem with that approach is the optics: Why should footballers be granted special exceptions to the rules when the general public will be forced into 14-day isolation?

The Sun report on what’s next for these European ties in relation to the forthcoming travel ban:

The issue will be raised when the FA take part in a video conference of Uefa members tomorrow.

Alternative neutral venues for the clubs to play the games are being considered, while Perth — the Australian city who reached out to the Prem — is also available.

(Man) City declined to comment on the quarantine issue. But this could dash the hopes of Guardiola’s men to finally lift the trophy.
