Man City fans upset with Martin Atkinson’s Liverpool appointment

Desperate to make a statement in their race to retain the Premier League title, Manchester City will travel to Anfield on Sunday.

Thanks to Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea last week, Pep Guardiola’s side now sit top of the table via their superior goal difference.

However, without a win on Merseyside in their last 19 attempts, it seems the odds have been further stacked against City.

It has been announced that Martin Atkinson will take charge of the game this weekend.

Sadly for Manchester City fans, they don’t have happy memories of the 47-year-old official.

Martin Atkinson and Manchester City

Despite breaking almost every record in the Premier League last season, the Citizens have failed to win their last three matches when Atkinson has been in charge.

The experienced referee has also found himself at the heart of some recent controversy.

Taking charge of City’s 1-1 draw with Wolves back in August, Atkinson failed to see Willy Boly’s clear handball.

His decision cost City to drop their only points in the Premier League so far.

This wasn’t the first time Guardiola’s side felt the official had cost them some crucial points.

Last season, Atkinson was appointed for Manchester United’s famous 3-2 comeback win at the Etihad.

With the opportunity to clinch the title against their old enemy on home soil, Atkinson should have shown Ashley Young a straight red for his horror tackle that left Sergio Aguero injured.

Prior to that, the Yorkshire man also took charge of City’s 1-1 draw at Turf Moor in February.

As for Liverpool’s record under Atkinson, Klopp’s men were unbeaten in all four matches he officiated on last year.
