Man United goalie David De Gea
When considering who is the best player on Manchester United’s books right now, is David De Gea at the top of the pile.
Yet again this season, De Gea has bailed out Jose Mourinho’s side on multiple occasions.
Most recently in last week’s Champions League game at Sevilla, De Gea pulled out a remarkable point-blank save to deny Luis Muriel scoring with a header.
Is De Gea the best keeper in the Premier League?
Many would no-doubt argue that case forcefully. But new data has revealed that the Man United number one is far behind his Man City and Chelsea rivals when it comes to his kicking skills.
Man City’s Ederson & Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois
Chelsea travel to United on Sunday in the Premier League.
United are 16 points behind Man City in the table, while Mourinho’s side have dropped to third place after Liverpool beat West Ham on Saturday.
Ahead of Sunday’s match at Old Trafford, EA Sports have released new data comparing the kicking skills of the top EPL stoppers:
Standing at the top of the pile by a country mile is Man City keeper Ederson. He has over a 84% completion rate with his feet.
When Thibaut Courtois is compared to De Gea, the Chelsea number one is the stand out performer of the two stoppers when the ball is at his feet.
He has completed over 100 more passes the De Gea this season (see table below), having only attempted 11 more that the Man United man.
Courtois’ stats mean he sits 3rd in the top 10 list of goalkeepers for both passes attempted and completed, David de Gea is only 8th on the very same list this season.
The Chelsea number 13’s stats are even more impressive when his pass completion percentage is calculated. He comes in with 70.7%, considerably higher than de Gea (56.6%), and that 70.7% makes him the 3rd most efficient passing keeper in the Premier League this season, behind the likes of Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris (73.7%).
Shot stopping: Courtois vs De Gea
The tale of the two keepers is a slightly different story when you compare the two players’ shot stopping qualities and statistics.
David de Gea has so far this season conceded less than the Chelsea man. The United man has conceded 19 goals in more minutes of football when compared to Courtois. De Gea has also recorded 15 clean sheets.
Chelsea’s Courtois has let in 23 goals for the season and managed 13 clean sheets.
Interestingly EA Sports data also shows that De Gea has been the busier of the two goalkeepers, making a total of 84 saves from shots faced both inside and outside the box this season – Courtois has stopped a total of 49 efforts from similar ranges.
The Spaniard has a higher save to shot ratio (0.27) than the Belgian (0.19) which could well be a major factor in United sitting 3 points (and one more win) in front of their South London opposition ahead of this weekend’s clash.
