Man City’s struggles
After two seasons of dominance in the English top-flight, Manchester City have been knocked off their perch this term.
Currently, Liverpool sit a staggering 22 points clear of 2nd place Man City in the Premier League with the title looking extremely likely to be heading to Merseyside this year.
One of City’s biggest issues this season has been their poor defence.
Throughout the entirety of the 2018/19 PL campaign, in which Man City amassed 98 points, the Sky Blues would concede just 23 goals.
However, this term, despite playing 13 fewer league ties, Man City have already let in 29 goals.
It seems as though there are two main reasons for City’s poor defensive displays this season.
The first being that they didn’t replace Vincent Kompany in the summer after the Belgian departed for Anderlecht.
The second reason is the fact Aymeric Laporte has spent the majority of the campaign out injured.
The Frenchman is arguably City’s best central defender, but he has made just one league appearance since picking up an injury vs Brighton at the back end of August.
Man City eyeing defensive reinforcements
With Kompany gone and Laporte sidelined for a long period, City’s defensive frailties have been very clear.
The likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi are simply not good enough for a side such as Man City with Fernandinho, a midfielder by trade, arguably City’s best centre-back in 2019/20.
But it looks as though the Sky Blues are set to address their centre-back issues in the next transfer window.
According to The Times, Pep Guardiola wants to sign two central defenders in the summer.
The report from The Times then goes on to name some defenders that City are interested in.
The Citizens are said to be tracking 23-year-old Villarreal defender Pau Torres and they have also scouted Benfica’s Ruben Dias, Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk.
