Man City boss Pep Guardiola insists Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham are title contenders

Tottenham vs Man City

One of the weekend’s marquee Premier League fixtures will see Pep Guardiola’s Man City face a trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.

The clash marks both sides’ first since the international break, and could prove significant when it comes to the title race.

Spurs will head into proceedings sitting 2nd in the Premier League table, following a fine start to the campaign which has seen them go undefeated in league action since the opening weekend.

Manchester City, on the other hand, haven’t looked anywhere close to their imperious best.

Granted, the Sky Blues have only lost once in the Premier League, but they have also drawn three of their seven outings thus far, a record which sees them sitting 10th in the table heading into the latest round of fixtures.

Guardiola on Mourinho’s Tottenham

Ahead of Saturday’s clash, meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has been heaping praise on Jose Mourinho’s Spurs, perhaps in order to put some added pressure on the hosts.

Tottenham, as mentioned above, head into the weekend’s action 2nd in the English top-flight, just a point adrift of table-topping Leicester.

And with no one side having yet established their dominance in the Premier League in 2020/21, Spurs may well be in with an outside chance of a title challenge.

This is certainly an opinion which Guardiola holds, with the City boss having recently labelled the Lilywhites Premier League ‘contenders’:

“The numbers speak for themselves. They dropped points against West Ham and Newcastle in the last minute – imagine the points if they hadn’t.

“They are contenders. The quality they’ve got is always there. They qualified for the Champions League for four or five years and reached the final.

“They have been a good team since Pochettino took over. It is a fantastic squad.”
