The hosts headed into proceedings aware that a win would, temporarily at least, guide them back to the summit of the English top-flight, amid a fine recent spell of form.

And, when all was said and done in Manchester, secure their latest 3-point haul is precisely what City managed.

Bernardo Silva opened the evening’s scoring in controversial circumstances ten minutes from time, before Ilkay Gundogan made sure of a City victory with 90 minutes on the clock, from the penalty spot.

Aguero ruled out

Next up for Guardiola and co., meanwhile, is an FA Cup 4th-round meeting with League Two outfit Cheltenham Town this weekend.

As outlined above, however, after seeing both Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne forced off with respective fitness issues versus Villa, the Citizens have today been dealt another concerning blow on the personnel front.

Sergio Aguero has of course endured a season to forget to date, having been restricted to just a trio of starts across all competitions by a series of fitness and general wellbeing woes.

His latest spell on the sidelines resulted from the Argentine coming into close contact with an individual who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19, with Aguero having missed City’s last 4 fixtures as a result.

And, if the latest update regarding his situation is anything to go by, then the veteran hitman looks set to remain unavailable to Pep Guardiola for some time yet.

In a post across his social media platforms on Thursday, Aguero announced that he himself has now returned a positive coronavirus test:
