Major concern for Barcelona as Chelsea tipped to activate release clause of midfield gem

Major concern for Barcelona as Chelsea tipped to activate release clause of midfield gem

Word spreading across the European media on Thursday has pointed towards a potentially serious concern for La Liga heavyweights FC Barcelona.

Camp Nou woes

It is, of course, safe to say that the job facing newly-appointed Barca boss Xavi Hernandez looks an uphill one at present.

On the back of a frankly dismal opening to the campaign under the watch of now former manager Ronald Koeman, the Blaugrana have been condemned to the depths of mid-table in the Spanish top-flight.

Their most recent outing, for example, saw the Catalans throw away a 3-goal advantage to eventually take just a share of the spoils away from a meeting with Celta Vigo, making it four straight league outings without a win.

Adding ever-further to the early-season concerns at the Camp Nou, meanwhile, has been an alarming stretch of bad luck on the personnel front.

The likes of Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati, Jordi Alba, Frenkie de Jong, Ousmane Dembele and more have all spent time on the treatment table over the last couple of months, leaving the incoming Xavi with a depleted squad of players to choose from.

Gavi eyed

And, as outlined above, if the latest transfer chatter in the media is anything to go by, then the concerns facing those in a position of power in the Catalan capital could be set to mount ever further.

This comes amid the suggestion that European champions Chelsea have set their sights on the latest breakthrough graduate from La Masia.

The player in question? Gavi.

17-year-old Gavi has of course exploded onto the scene over the early months of the campaign, establishing himself as one of the most highly-regarded young players on the continent.

Not only has the midfielder, despite his age, carved out a regular starting berth for himself at club level but, remarkably, on the international stage, too, shining across a quartet of appearances for Spain.

And such form, evidently, has piqued attentions in the Premier League.

As reported by Albert Roge of Spanish outlet Diario Sport (citing English sources), Chelsea are giving genuine consideration to activating Gavi’s 50 million euro release clause:

Such claims, however, must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Just days ago, it was widely reported that Gavi is in fact inching closer to putting pen to paper on fresh terms with Barcelona, with talks between the two parties at the ‘final stages’.
