As per a report from David Maddock, Manchester United remain in contact with Premier League rivals Tottenham over a deal for Toby Alderweireld, as the Red Devils continue their push to secure the signature of a top central defender before the English transfer window slams shut later today.
Alderweireld, a 29-year-old Belgian international, has been on the books of Spurs since making the move to London from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
The no-nonsense stopper caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs with his stellar showings during a loan spell with Southampton during the 2014-15 campaign, with Tottenham eventually splashing out a fee of around £12 million for his services.
And Alderweireld has since gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as one of the English top-flight’s finest defenders over the last couple of seasons.
However, in a saga that has been dragging on for some time now, Spurs’ attempts to tie their star defender down to a new contract in the English capital have proven completely unfruitful, with little to no progress having reportedly been made to this point.
Alderweireld’s current Tottenham contract is set to expire in the summer of 2019, though his deal also contains an option for a further year.
However, the complex terms of the proposed extension would see the Belgian’s release clause drop to just £25 million, as long as any interested clubs agreed to pay the entirety of the clause at least 14 days before the close of the transfer window.
As such, the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and more have all been linked with potential moves for Alderweireld, with the Belgian having struggled for game-time in North London after returning from injury earlier this year.
Manchester United have been the club most heavily touted as a potential destination for Alderweireld, with Jose Mourinho long-rumoured to be on the lookout for central defensive reinforcements this summer.
Mind made up
And, after seeing their inquiries into the availability of Leicester City stopper Harry Maguire firmly knocked back by the Foxes, United are now said to be more keen than ever on securing a deal for Alderweireld.
As such, as per the aforementioned report from David Maddock of the Mirror this afternoon, negotiations between the Red Devils and Tottenham over the Belgian remain ‘ongoing’ at this point, as the club continue to ‘vigorously pursue’ a deal for a new centre-half.
Maddock adds that United have also made contact with Atletico Madrid over Diego Godin (though this approach was rejected by the player himself) and Leicester once again over Harry Maguire (though Claude Puel has since confirmed again that the English international is going nowhere).
As such, Alderweireld looks to be the only viable option for the Old Trafford giants at this moment in time, as the clock ticks towards the fast-approaching close of the English transfer window this evening:
Jose Mourinho may be glum, but #MUFC continue to vigorously pursue deal for centre half, and have by no means given up hope of getting one of them across the line before 5pm. Dialogue still ongoing over Alderweireld, and contact over Godin and Maguirehttps://t.co/fl2JRNBLhQ
