History will remember Memphis Depay as a Man United flop but there was once great hype around the Dutchman after his arrival from PSV. Handed the number 7 shirt, many hoped he would be the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Unfortunately for Memphis, he never came close to hitting these heights. Just seven goals in 53 appearances followed before he was sold 18 months after joining. Now at Lyon, he’s trying to recover from that spell.
His first few months in Ligue 1 were promising and included a goal from his own half. Clearly a confidence player, Memphis appears to be feeling optimistic about the coming campaign. So much so that he’s called out Neymar.
Ligue 1 rivalry
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Neymar has moved to PSG for a world record fee.
Many expect the striker to help the club reassert themselves as the top club in the division after losing out on the title to an exciting Monaco side last season. But Memphis doesn’t think it will be a walk in the park for Neymar.
He posted a video on his Instagram page showing off his stunning shot accuracy and wrote: Hey Neymar, welcome to Ligue 1! I look forward to seeing who nets the most free kicks this season – I’m most definitely up for the challenge.
Rival fans have ridiculed him for trying to go toe to toe with one of the world’s best players. We admire his chutzpah. Check out his video below and maybe you’ll be convinced he can challenge too.
