Luke Shaw joins Man United boss Solskjaer in heaping praise on Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has singled Chelsea shot-stopper Edouard Mendy out for special praise, on the back of his side’s stalemate with the Blues.

Spoils shared at Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men welcomed fellow top-4 hopefuls Chelsea to Manchester on Saturday evening.

Both sides headed into proceedings on the back of hit-and-miss starts to the campaign, though hosts United had managed a pair of impressive victories since the international break.

As such, the Red Devils were no doubt confident in their chances of taking advantage of a Blues outfit still attempting to find their identity, to make it 3 consecutive wins across all competitions.

When all was said and done at Old Trafford, however, the hosts failed to do so.

An altogether uninspired 90 minutes of action, with chances of note few and far between, eventually saw both sides forced to settle for a point, in a 0-0 draw.

‘Wonderful saves’

When it came to talking points from the 90 minutes in Manchester, it should therefore come as little surprise to find that there weren’t exactly a plethora to choose from.

Both managers appeared to set their sides up with the aim of avoiding defeat, rather than chasing a win, tactics which evidently had a telling effect on the action (or lack thereof) yesterday evening.

There were, though, nevertheless a couple of impressive individual performances at Old Trafford.

Edouard Mendy is the first name to spring to mind, with the 28-year-old having produced a trio of solid stops over the course of the 90 minutes.

The last proved most notable, with Mendy having sprung into action to push Marcus Rashford’s late goal-bound effort around the far post.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was actually spotted celebrating as Rashford’s strike made its way towards goal, with it having looked, for a split second at least, as though Manchester United were set to snatch all 3 points at the death.

As such, during his post-match press conference, it came as little surprise to see the Red Devils boss full of praise for Mendy:

‘Their keeper made two fantastic saves from Marcus,’ Solskjaer noted. ‘They were the two brightest moments and they were great saves. If there was a winner, it should have been us.’

And, as outlined above, one of United’s stars has since followed suit in singling Mendy out as difference-maker in yesterday’s clash.

Speaking during an interview with the Reds’ official website, Luke Shaw suggested that Chelsea’s summer addition ‘kept them in the game’, with more than one ‘wonderful’ save:

‘I feel like we created the better chances.’

‘Their keeper made wonderful saves at times. I was right behind it [Rashford’s shot] and, like I said, their keeper was very good today. He made a couple of very good saves that kept them in the game.’
