Lucas Torreira’s agent claims Arsenal overpaid for midfielder
Went above and beyond for his signature
Lucas Torreira’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, has claimed that Arsenal overpaid for the midfielder when they signed him from Sampdoria in the summer window.
Torreira had been linked with a number of clubs including Arsenal, Napoli and even Everton.
It was the Gunners who eventually won the race for the player as he signed in a deal thought to be worth in the region of £25million.
Now, it’s been revealed by the player’s agent that Arsenal actually overpaid to make sure they were ahead of the other clubs in the race to sign him.
It all could have been very different
Lucas Torreira’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, has explained to Radio CRC – as cited by Calcio Mercato – that Arsenal paid €5m more than the midfielders release clause.
Not only that, but he seemed to suggest it was a shame that the player didn’t move to Napoli.
“In the end, the gunners satisfied our demands and they even were willing to pay 5 million euros more than his release clause,” Bentancur explained.
“EPL? He is adapting well to the league and he is happy to be here with Arsenal.”
“Napoli? It’s really too bad,” he continued.
“Ancelotti wasn’t in place yet when the talks were ongoing between the involved parties.
“He could’ve been a great mentor and coach for Lucas.
“But as my client told me, talks were too advanced with Arsenal at that point in time.
“If his move to Arsenal would’ve collapsed then a move to Napoli would’ve been perfect for him.”
Interesting claim from Lucas Torreira’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, to Radio Crc that #afc over-paid Sampdoria for the midfielder: “If Arsenal had collapsed then Napoli would have been perfect… Arsenal satisfied all of our requests, even paying €5m more than the release clause.”
