Louis van Gaal left Manchester United a pretty unhappy man, and thought that he should have been given more time at Old Trafford, and when his former assistant Jose Mourinho came in to take the job – in football’s worst kept secret, he was furious.
Now, after appearing at Manchester United’s away trip to Liverpool, Van Gaal made his feelings very clear – and also offered some kind words – for the crowd at Anfield. Jose Mourinho meanwhile did not fare as well at all.
The Express report he said:“The minute before the whistle, when they sing ‘You’ll never walk alone’, I get goose bumps all over my body.
“Oh, that’s wonderful! It’s the biggest game in the UK.
“Man City vs. Man United? This is not even close to Liverpool against United.
“This is as big as Barca vs Real or Ajax against Feyenoord in my home.”
Jose hits out
Mourinho for his part was not thrilled with the criticism that came his way after the game, and when you look at Eric Bailly being out, along with a half fit Marcus Rashford following the international break and also the long term injury to Paul Pogba and the issues in midfield, Mourinho may feel it was a good point.
He made it clear after the game he had no options in the middle of the park, with Maroune Fellaini and Michael Carrick also on the injury list, and Jurgen Klopp making ‘like for like’ changes, so Mourinho could not adapt to the game with his changes.
Liverpool fans meanwhile were not happy – and it was Manchester City fans who were the winners of the weekend, with their huge win making the headlines as their rivals all dropped points.
