Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk pens heartfelt message following return to action

Van Dijk sidelined

Since his arrival at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk has been one of Liverpool’s most valuable assets.

The centre-back, along with Alisson, helped transform a dysfunctional backline into one of the best in Europe, winning the Premier League and Champions League along the way.

However, the Reds would lose their star stopper for much of the 2020/21 campaign when he clashed with Jordan Pickford in October.

The Dutchman required knee surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the domestic season and Euro 2020.

Van Dijk’s message

However, we have now seen the centre-back take to the pitch for the first time since his injury.

Liverpool took on Hertha Berlin in a pre-season friendly clash on Thursday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side would go on to lose the bout 4-3, but there were still some positives to take from the game – mainly that Joe Gomez and Van Dijk earned their first minutes since their respective injuries in 2020/21.

Van Dijk would come on for the final 20 minutes. And following the game, he has penned a message on his official Twitter account, detailing his gratitude to all the people who have supported him on his way back from injury:

285 days ago, I started on a journey back towards playing. It’s hard to express how I am feeling, but it’s important to me that I say I feel blessed to have had the support of so many incredible people. The surgeon, my physios, coaches and staff who have been with me in my corner since day one. My teammates for giving me energy and keeping my head up. The fans for their love, support and encouragement. And most of all, my family because without them, I’d be nothing. Thank you. The work doesn’t stop now. It’s only just starting. We keep going!
