Liverpool vs Porto
Liverpool are back in Champions League action on Tuesday night at Anfield.
The Reds have progressed through to the last 8, where they have been drawn against Porto.
Liverpool moved back into first place in the Premier League over the weekend following a 3-1 away win at Southampton.
Man City are two points behind the Reds, although they have a game in hand.
Porto are second in the Portuguese top flight, behind Benfica on goal difference.
Porto warmed up for the trip to Merseyside with a 2-0 home win over Boavista on Friday.
Pepijn Lijnders: Porto wanted Liverpool
Ahead of Tuesday’s match, Liverpool first team coach Pepijn Lijnders has spoken to the Times.
According to Lijnders, he believes that Porto wanted to play against Jurgen Klopp’s charges in the quarterfinals:
There was only one club in the last eight that wanted us and that was Porto.
All the others in the last eight wanted to avoid us, but Porto will love the chance to go again against us. I know it because of their mentality.
Sergio (Conceicao) is a motivational coach and he will use that. Motivate is not the right word. It is revenge. They want to set something right.
The attitude of Porto is: always more, always better. They love the ones who hate to lose. Many clubs are in the game because of football, but Porto is in the game for silverware. That is their reason.
Liverpool met Porto in last season’s Champions League knockout phase.
On that occasion, Liverpool humiliated Porto with a 5-0 away win in Iberia. Porto drew 0-0 at Anfield.
