Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson has been player of the season so far – Shearer

Liverpool dominate Southampton

Liverpool played host to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints, at one point in the season, looked as though they could be returning to the Championship next term. But Southampton’s form has since improved a fair bit.

Despite the upturn in results for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, though, they were unable to weather the storm of a simply outstanding Liverpool side.

Southampton would hold their own in the first 45. But just two minutes after the interval, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would open the scoring for the Merseyside powerhouse.

Jordan Henderson then added Liverpool’s second in the 60th minute, with a Mohamed Salah brace then ensuring all three points were going to Liverpool.

Shearer praises Henderson

That victory put Liverpool 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League, and means that they are now undefeated in 25 league outings this season.

With Liverpool in such superb form, it is easy to single out the likes of Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk for praise.

But when speaking after Liverpool’s win on Saturday, Alan Shearer instead decided to heap praise on Henderson.

Shearer even went as far as to say that if the campaign ended tomorrow, Henderson would be his player of the season:

“I believe that if the season was to end tomorrow, he would be my Player of the Season. Absolutely no doubt about it.

“I think he was magnificent again today.

“The way he drove Liverpool forward, the way he kept everything moving, his attitude, his work-rate both attacking and defensively, starting moves off, can he pass it forward? Yes he can.

“He gets his reward of his goal because of his hard work. I thought he was magnificent, as he has been all season.

“What a season he’s having, absolutely incredible.

“When you look at some of their performances, how special Liverpool have been, whether it’s the goalkeeper, [Virgil] Van Dijk, or the front three, he for me has been the driving force. He’s been superb.” As quoted by Goal.
