Liverpool transfer windfall revealed as Aston Villa sign Ings

Jurgen Klopp

Aston Villa sign Danny Ings

Completely out of the blue on wednesday evening, Aston Villa announced that they had reached an agreement with Southampton for the signing of Danny Ings.

The striker had previously turned down a new contract at St. Mary’s, saying he wanted to test himself at a higher level, thought to mean Champions League clubs.

However, it proved to be Aston Villa, who finished just four places (and 12 points) ahead of Ings’ former club, that have snapped up the England international.

The fee, as revealed by The Athletic, came in at 30 million pounds, which is thought to be covered by the imminent sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

Liverpool set for transfer windfall

Another beneficiary of the deal that has seen Ings swap the South Coast for Villa Park are Liverpool.

Ings spent 3 years on Merseyside, but injury limited him to just 25 appearances for the Merseyside club. As a result, he joined Southampton for a fee of 25 million pounds in 2019. In addition to the fee, Liverpool were able to add a 20% sell on fee into the deal.

However, as James Pearce of The Athletic cleared up, this only applied to the part of the fee above 20 million pounds.

As such, Jurgen Klopp’s side will receive 2 million pounds from the 30 million pounds transfer fee, which could prove important with the perceived need to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

Liverpool have already raised funds through the sales of Taiwo Awoniyi, Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic, sold for a combined 27 million pounds (as per transfermarkt).

That, added to the two million pounds received from the Ings deal, could finally allow Klopp to begin strengthening his squad.
