Liverpool to risk season on the quality of youth as January reinforcements not expected

Liverpool to risk season on the quality of youth as January reinforcements not expected

Injury nightmare

Liverpool have befallen some of the worst injury luck the Premier League has seen. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out with long-term knee injuries. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson also picked up knocks over the last week.

Fabinho and Thiago have also been absent alongside Joel Matip for a short period.

With such poor luck defensively, it would not have been unwise to believe the Reds may look to January as a source of reinforcement. With Liverpool signing just one defensive player in the summer window, Konstantinos Tsimikas from Olympiacos, further additions were not unrealistic.

However, reports have surfaced that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are not planning any immediate action. Schalke’s Ozan Kabak had been linked as a possible move to Liverpool but that has since seemingly gone somewhat cold.

The Athletic have reported that Liverpool have no intention of entering the winter window to bolster their options. Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have both featured in senior roles this season and it will be highly likely now for the pair to get more minutes this season.

Klopp remembers Clemence

The sad news broke this week that former Liverpool, Spurs and Scunthorpe United goalkeeper Ray Clemence had passed away. Clemence made an unbelievable 665 appearances winning five league titles and three European Cups amongst other trophies.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to Clemence in a touching statement.

“We should never forget it is great players who make great teams and clubs. You only need to listen to the legends of LFC from his era to understand his significance.”

“They say it better than I ever could; that Ray Clemence is one of the reasons our club is such a special one all these years later. He was one of the foundation stones that so much of this club’s success was built on.”

“Our feeling in this moment is of course overwhelmingly sadness, but it is also appreciation. Our fans will remember with fondness an extraordinary player and a wonderful person who contributed so much to Liverpool Football Club.”

“He and his loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Many other footballing icons including Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and Peter Shilton have also paid tribute.
