Liverpool’s surprise back four predicted vs Porto

Porto vs Liverpool

Liverpool take on Porto in their Champions League last-16 first-leg on Wednesday night.

The Reds head into the match in fairly decent form, with January’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea the only blemish on their recent record.

Roberto Firmino and Momahed Salah bagged a goal and an assist each as Liverpool beat Southampton 2-0 last Sunday. Salah is just one goal away from reaching 30 goals in all competitions for the season.

Sergio Conceicao’s Porto side sit at the top of the Primeira Liga table, two points above Benfica, with a game in hand.

Porto are currently on a 15-match unbeaten run at home in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp’s surprise back four vs Porto

On Wednesday morning, the Times have predicted how Liverpool will line up in Portugal.

Perhaps the most interesting and difficult decisions before the game is how the Reds will line up in defence.

Last weekend at Southampton, the Reds back four were as follows: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil Van Dijk and Andrew Robertson.

But the broadsheet think that Matip and Robertson will be rotated for Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno.

Whether that will happen remains to be seen, while Klopp could also play Joe Gomez at right back instead of Alexander-Arnold.

Looking around the rest of the Times’ predicted XI, there are few surprises.

Emre Can will serve a one-match suspension, so Jordan Henderson seems certain to start after he missed the Southampton game.

There is no room in midfield for Alex Oxlade-Chamerlain to start.

Up-top Liverpool should deploy their fearsome threesome of Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.
