Liverpool still likely to be crowned Premier League champions if season abandoned – Telegraph

Liverpool on course for first PL title

The 2019/20 Premier League season has been well and truly dominated by Liverpool.

The Merseyside powerhouse have won 27 of their 29 PL ties so far this term, drawing once vs Manchester United and losing once vs Watford.

Liverpool also currently boast the best defence in the English top-flight, conceding just 21 goals in 29 outings.

And with Manchester City nowhere near as impressive as they were last term, Liverpool’s top form has allowed them to open up a staggering 25 point gap between themselves and 2nd place.

In addition, with 2nd placed City having just 30 points left to play for this season, the title looked set to be coming to Liverpool in the coming weeks.

What happens if PL is abandoned?

However, on Friday the 13th of March, the Premier League was suspended with the intention of resuming on April 4th.

The reason for this was due to the spread of COVID-19 (the coronavirus).

The virus has had a major impact on the footballing world, with top leagues such as the  Serie A and La Liga also stopping their games earlier this week.

It has since been reported that a senior Premier League source has claimed there is a 75% chance the season will not be completed.

And whilst obviously the health and wellbeing of the population is much more important than any sport, Liverpool fans may be curious as to if they would actually be awarded their first league title for 30 years.

Well, according to the Telegraph, Liverpool are still likely to be crowned Premier League champions, even if the coronavirus causes the season to be abandoned.
