Liverpool move to avoid Georginio Wijnaldum repeat with Naby Keita

Liverpool move to avoid Georginio Wijnaldum repeat with Naby Keita

Wijnaldum departs for free

In one of the more bizarre decisions of the transfer window, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was allowed to depart Merseyside for free upon the expiry of his contract.

The Dutchman, who was an ever-present last season, had seemingly become a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp’s side, but at 30, was considered replaceable by the club hierarchy. Wijnaldum subsequently moved to Paris Saint Germain, as he kicked off their summer spree.

Now, Liverpool will be looking to avoid making the same mistake twice, as the contract situation with Naby Keita heats up.

Keita’s Liverpool stint

By most judgments, Naby Keita’s Liverpool career has been underwhelming since his 54 million pound move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool.

The Guinean midfielder has made just 80 appearances for the club in 3 seasons, and managed just 7 Premier League starts last campaign, with three further substitute appearances. Far from what Reds fans expected when they splashed such a large amount on the energetic midfielder.

Still just 26 years old, there is time for Keita to resurrect his Liverpool career, but with only two years left on his current deal on Merseyside, reports from Italy [via the Daily Mail] suggest that Liverpool are looking to extend his contract in the near future if only to avoid a Wijnaldum repeat.

Liverpool’s no.8 could yet have a prominent role in the first team this season, but with competition from Thiago and Curtis Jones for the final central midfield berth, may have to make do with a bit-part role once more.

As such, a new contract could symbolise little more than a desire for him not to depart on a free transfer, with Liverpool perhaps set to admit rare transfer failure on their mega-money man.
