Wijnaldum’s Liverpool stint
Georginio Wijnaldum joined Liverpool in the summer of 2016 from fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle.
The Dutchman enjoyed a slightly more advanced role with the Magpies, but he has since become an integral member of Liverpool’s midfield three.
In total, Wijnaldum has racked up 174 appearances across all competitions for the Merseyside powerhouse, in which he has scored 17 and assisted 16.
Wijnaldum’s latest strike came on Monday evening, as Liverpool fought from 1-0 down to clinch a 3-2 victory over West Ham.
That win means that the Reds are now just four league victories away from bagging their first-ever Premier League title.
Wijnaldum on playing in the Netherlands again
The 2019/20 PL title will be Wijnaldum’s second major piece of silverware with Liverpool, after the 2019 Champions League.
And whilst Wijnaldum has been key to Liverpool’s success in recent times, the 29-year-old has today been discussing life after Liverpool.
Wijnaldum has less than 18 months remaining on his current Reds contract, and when speaking about it earlier this year, the Dutch international remained rather coy on the situation, stating that he is just focusing on bringing the season to a good end.
And Wijnaldum has since provided a further update on his future, stating that he sees himself playing for one of his former clubs again, such as PSV:
“In the future I see myself playing for Feyenoord, PSV or Sparta again.
“Sometimes I look at Sparta and think ‘it would be great to spend my last years as a professional there’. In the Netherlands I played for three clubs and still have a good feeling about all three of them. But you can only pick one.
“I can’t promise anything though. I learn from other players too. Van Nistelrooy once promised to come back, but changed his mind over the years.” As quoted by the Daily Mail.
