Liverpool may forfeit Carabao Cup quarter-final vs Aston Villa & Pep Guardiola calls out Sadio Mane for diving

Aston Villa 1 – Liverpool 2

Aston Villa came close to inflicting a first Premier League defeat of the season on Liverpool.

However, a late fightback from Jurgen Klopp’s men meant Liverpool won 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday.

Trezeguet fired Villa into a first-half lead after 21 minutes.

Andy Robertson drew Liverpool level in the 87th minute, before an injury-time header from Sadio Mane won the match for the visitors.

Liverpool may forfeit Carabao Cup quarter-final vs Aston Villa

Aston Villa are scheduled to host Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

However, there’s a chance that Liverpool may forfeit the cup tie due to their hectic fixture list in December and January.

Reporter Jonathan Northcroft has delved into the issue in the Sunday Times, revealing:

Already facing 10 matches in 30 days — including the Club World Cup in Qatar — it’s no surprise that Liverpool feel unable to cram in another.

They won’t play their Carabao Cup quarter-final v Aston Villa on its scheduled date of December 17 and are prepared to scratch it if a January alternative isn’t found.

What does this say about the standing of the League Cup?

Pep Guardiola calls out Sadio Mane for diving

While Sadio Mane was Liverpool’s hero at Villa Park, Man City manager Pep Guardiola took a subtle dig at the Senegalese forward on Saturday.

During the Villa match, Mane was booked for diving.

Mane – who was recently accused of diving against Leicester City – was singled out by Guardiola, as the Spanish boss said:

It has happened many times, what Liverpool have done, in the last few years, it’s because [Mané] is a special talent.

Sometimes he’s diving, sometimes he has this talent to score incredible goals in the last minute. He’s a talent.
