Liverpool & Man City stars post support for Gaza, Andy Carroll shows support for Israel

Liverpool & Man City stars post support for Gaza, Andy Carroll shows support for Israel

Footballers wade into Israel, Gaza conflict

Over the past couple of days, violent conflict in Israel and Gaza has escalated quickly.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have fired over a thousand rockets into Israel.

Israel has responded with hundreds of aerial bombardments in Gaza.

In reaction to the unfolding events, many high-profile footballers have posted statements on social media.

Liverpool & Man City stars post support for Gaza

On Tuesday night, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah posted his support for Gaza on social media.

Interestingly, Salah seemed to intentionally avoid writing words like Israel, Palestine, Gaza or Hamas in his updates.

Instead, the Liverpool forward initially posted a picture of himself stood outside the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

In a second post, Salah called on the UK government “to do everything in their power to make sure the violence and killing of innocent people stops immediately”.

Salah was far from the first footballer, however, to wade into the current crisis in the Middle East.

Manchester United’s Paul Pogba was one of the first players to address the conflict.

On May 9, Pogba posted the following on Instagram: “The world needs peace and love. It will soon be Eid. Let us all love one another #PrayForPalestine”

Man City’s Riyad Mahrez has also posted support for Palestine.

On May 10, Mahrez uploaded an image of the Palestinian flag onto social media.

The City winger added the hashtags #Palestine #SaveSheikhJarrah to his post.

Elsewhere, Sadio Mane posted the word “Heartbreaking” alongside a graphic saying “Free Palestine”.

Newcastle’s Andy Carroll shows support for Israel

Not all footballers, however, are siding with the Palestinians.

Former Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham midfielder, Yossi Benayoun, has posted his support on Israel on his Instagram account.

Benayoun, of course, is Israeli.

Many have noticed that Newcastle United striker, Andy Carroll, posted his support to Benayoun’s social media update.

Carroll is due to leave Newcastle at the end of the season when his contract expires.

As a result of his implied support for Israel, Carroll has been subjected to the following types of comments on social media today.

PSV players are taking opposing positions in public

Perhaps the starkest divide between footballers is happening at PSV.

One of PSV’s star players is Israeli international striker Eran Zahavi.

Zahavi is currently dealing with his own trauma after his family was robbed at gunpoint last weekend in Holland.

However, away from his own problems, Zahavi has posted several updates on Instagram in support of Israel and it’s army.

Yet, the atmosphere in the PSV locker room is likely to be tense, as several of Zahavi’s teammates have posted their support for Palestine.

As reported by Telegraaf, PSV players Pablo Rosario, Mohamed Ihattaren and Jordan Teze all posted the following message on Instagram: “You don’t have to be a Muslim to stand up for Gaza. You just need to be human”.

Mesut Ozil & Fenerbahce wear t-shirts while Wolves & West Ham delete tweets

On Tuesday night, Mesut Ozil and his Fenerbahce teammates stepped out onto the pitch wearing t-shirts in support of Palestine.

Earlier in the week, West Ham’s official Arabic language account on Twitter showed support for the Palestinians.

The Wolves Arabic Twitter account also posted a similar message.

However, both the West Ham and Wolves accounts have since deleted those political statements.

Celtic fans put Palestinian flags up at Parkhead

On Wednesday night, Celtic take on St Johnstone in the Scottish top flight.

Ahead of the game, the North Curve Celtic group have revealed that they’ve displayed a series of Palestinian flags in the stands at Parkhead.
