Ian Rush has lavished praise on Raheem Sterling ahead of the meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City this evening, and the Liverpool legend has warned his former side just how good Sterling has become under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City – noting that he’s improved as a player and has impressed since leaving the Reds after a difficult period.
“He’s been absolutely amazing. I knew Raheem when he was 15, 16 and I knew he was always going to be amazing. He was so quick.
“Since he’s gone to Manchester City, he’s come on. Under Guardiola, he’s improved tremendously. He’s something very special.
“He’ll be very dangerous but if you look at when he’s played against Liverpool, he hasn’t been at his best. Guardiola has done something very special for him.
“Under Brendan Rodgers he wasn’t quite experienced enough but after a tough first six months at City, he’s overcome that and is number one in England’s team.”
Both sides have seen their defences called into question this season, and with such attacking talent on offer, there’s certainly room for both Salah and De Bruyne to score goals during the tie and while it may not be the thing everyone is talking about, how well each side defend during the tie will have a huge amount to do with who progresses.
There have been injury blows to both sides, with Joel Matip ruled out and Emre Can a doubt for the game for Klopp’s men, and Sergio Aguero not fit enough to make the cut for City.
