Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC: Score prediction & betting tips

Liverpool welcome Chelsea to Anfield on Wednesday evening for their last home game of the 2019/20 season.

The Reds’ defeat last Wednesday at Arsenal means they can no longer set a new Premier League record for the most points in a single season. However, there are still three targets they can achieve this season.

A win at Anfield in their final home game would see them equal Manchester City’s record of eighteen home wins in a season. Should they then win their final game of the season against Newcastle, this would also tie them with City for the most games won overall in a season, at thirty-two.

They could also set a new record for the largest winning margin in a season. This would require them to collect two points more than Manchester City from the remaining two league games.

Chelsea have far more important targets to achieve this season. Should Leicester and United both earn more points from the remaining two games, Chelsea could slide out of Champions League qualification.

With the Foxes and Man United playing each other on the final weekend of the season, a defeat here for Chelsea could see a situation where their rivals for Champions League football simply play out a draw on Sunday to see both sides qualify.

Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC: What are the betting odds?

Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC: What are the betting odds?

Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Burnley here in their last home match, was the first match they failed to claim all three points at Anfield this season. A win on Wednesday evening would see them equal Manchester City’s record of eighteen home wins in a season. They start the match at evens to come out victorious against Frank Lampard’s side.

Three of Chelsea’s last four league visits here have all ended in 1-1 stalemates. This makes the odds of 14/5 look very attractive on Wednesday.

Looking back as far as the 1960’s, Chelsea have just seven English top-flight wins at Anfield in the league from forty-seven visits. Although, their record in the Premier League era is a slightly healthier six wins from twenty-seven. They start the match at 23/10 to claim their first league win here during the Jurgen Klopp era.

Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC: Most likely goalscorers?

Sadio Mané has often been Liverpool’s difference maker against Wednesday’s opponents. His opener proved to be the winning goal when the sides last met here in the league back in April 2019. The Senegal international also scored a brace against the Pensioners in the Super Cup Final at the start of the season; a match ultimately won on penalties by Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah is the favourite to get on the scoresheet for Liverpool on Wednesday night. He has fallen behind in the hunt for a third consecutive golden boot award, currently trailing Jamie Vardy by four goals. The Egyptian King will need to find the scoresheet here, and likely more than once, if he has any hope in matching Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer by finishing the Premier League’s top scorer again this season.

Following the departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, Willian is now the player in blue with the most goals against Liverpool in this fixture. His three goals in seventeen games record doesn’t sound so impressive. However, both league goals against the Reds by the Brazilian have come here at Anfield. The 31-year old is also in good form, with four goals for Chelsea since Project Restart.

Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC: Match preview

“The league table doesn’t lie.”

This is the oft used mantra of pundits. While this is likely true when comparing teams over a full 38-game season, individual matches are usually a clash of styles. They can be decided by a moment of luck, a contentious refereeing decision or a moment of genius. This fits the pattern of games between these sides quite nicely.

When Liverpool eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League on route to winning their 5th European Cup, the infamous ‘Ghost Goal’ ultimately separated the sides. Although, the referee would have brandished a red card and given Liverpool a penalty had the goal not have stood.

Or when we look at the European Super Cup in August, we see Liverpool benefit from a goal disallowed for offside. Adrian made a string of big saves all before the Reds won the roulette of penalties.

We have also seen moments of brilliance aplenty in this fixture. From Drogba bullying the Liverpool defence, to Hazard’s solo goal where he embarrassed Moreno before tucking it past Mignolet.

There have been plenty of moments of brilliance from those in Red also recently. Daniel Sturridge’s outrageous strike into the top corner just two seasons ago. Likewise, in the last league fixture between them here at Anfield, Salah’s wonderful long-range strike past the hapless Kepa (shown above).

Regardless of what the league table says about the level of these two teams over the previous 36 games this season, this will likely matter for little come Wednesday at 8:15 pm. It will undoubtedly be a very close match – similar to the twenty previous matches all separated by two goals or less.

The result will most likely come down to luck, a contentious refereeing decision, or a moment of brilliance once again. The only thing we do know for sure of this match is, come 10 pm, Liverpool will be lifting the Premier League trophy on the purposefully built stage at the Kop end for the first time during the Premier League era.

Liverpool FC team news vs Chelsea FC

Nathaniel Clyne left the club at the end of June after the expiry of his contract. He had not featured for Liverpool this season due to an ACL injury picked up in pre-season.

Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip (pictured above) have both confirmed they will not make it back onto this pitch for Liverpool this season due to knee and ankle injuries respectively. Although, Liverpool fans will hope Jordan has enough in his legs to do a little shuffle and a trophy lift at full time.

Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench for the final seven minutes of the Reds’ 2-1 defeat at the Emirates. It was his first appearance for Liverpool since a 1-minute cameo at the end of their 0-1 win at Spurs back in January. He is expected to be involved from the bench once more.

Dejan Lovren was an unused substitute for Liverpool’s trip to London last Wednesday. He isn’t expected to be involved in the final two games, unless Joe Gomez or Virgil van Dijk pick up a knock.

James Milner was left out for the visit to Arsenal last week. Klopp confirmed he is struggling with a minor thigh problem and it doesn’t make sense to risk him.

Naby Keita looked Liverpool’s most dangerous player against Arsenal once he was introduced from the bench. He looks likely to start here with Oxlade-Chamberlain the most likely to make way.

Chelsea FC team news vs Liverpool FC

Abdul Rahman Baba, Ethan Ampadu and Marco van Ginkel are all ruled out through injury.

Billy Gilmour (pictured above) damaged the meniscus in his knee. He has already had surgery to solve the issue but will take no further part in Chelsea’s season.

N’Golo Kante also looks likely to miss the match. He has been struggling with a hamstring problem. Liverpool fans will likely expect the French midfielder to start, given the miraculous recovery from injury he has made already twice this season to face them.

Fikayo Tomori was an unused substitute on the bench last week against Norwich. Having now recovered from a muscle problem, he should be available for selection here once more, if required.
