Liverpool & Real Madrid
Will Liverpool be drawn against Real Madrid in the knockout phase of the Champions League?
There’s a possibility that last season’s Champions League finalists could face off in the next round.
While Real Madrid have already won their group before today’s match at home against CSKA Moscow, Liverpool finished their group in second place.
Jurgen Klopp on Real Madrid
After Liverpool beat Napoli 1-0 on Tuesday, Jurgen Klopp was asked for his thoughts on coming up against Real Madrid again. The Reds manager said:
We will wait for the draw.
Until tonight I wasn’t even sure we would be in the draw so now we are in it how could I sit here and ask for any team?
I don’t care.
We are second in the group so we could have an outstanding, strong opponent.
Liverpool vs Sergio Ramos & Virgil Van Dijk’s tackle vs Dries Mertens
One of the big talking points after Liverpool beat Napoli was a tackle Virgil Van Dijk made on Dries Mertens.
Van Dijk was booked early in the first half after the Dutch defender went to ground with a sliding tackle.
While VVD made obvious contact with the ball, the Liverpool defender caught Mertens with his follow-through.
Still images of the incident revealed how Van Dijk bent Mertens’ ankle in their coming together.
Many have claimed Van Dijk was fortunate to (a) avoid breaking Mertens’ leg and (b) avoid being punished with a red card.
There’s also some on social media who have used the Van Dijk vs Mertens incident as a way of questioning how Liverpool fans have vilified Sergio Ramos in recent times.
Real Madrid’s centre-half remains enemy number one for many Reds supporters following his challenge on Mo Salah in last season’s Champions League final.

When Sergio Ramos "unintentionally" injured Salah they wanted his head but because this was unintentional it should be overlooked
