Liverpool expected to start official contract negotiations with van Dijk & Fabinho in next few months

Liverpool’s defensive woes

The last few weeks have proven something of a nightmare for Liverpool.

The Reds’ injury luck has been pretty dreadful, with a number of the club’s key stars currently sidelined.

The headline news last month was, of course, the long-term injury picked up by Virgil van Dijk during the Merseyside derby, with the Dutchman now expected to miss the majority of the campaign.

This was followed by Fabinho, who had begun deputising at centre-half in van Dijk’s absence, suffering a hamstring injury.

And, just when it looked as though things couldn’t get any worse for Jurgen Klopp’s men, both Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold also went on to pick up injuries, with the former too now expected to miss a good chunk of the campaign.

Liverpool want to sign van Dijk & Fabinho to new deals

This has since been followed by Mohamed Salah testing positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

As such, the mood around Liverpool, as things stand, is likely not too positive.

However, the Reds faithful have this week also been handed something of a boost.

This comes in the form of potential contract extensions for some of the club’s star players.

Speaking on the latest edition of his Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano reported that he expects Liverpool to start official contract negotiations with both Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho over the coming months:

They want to extend his contract, they want van Dijk for the future. They are starting to talk, they are starting to have a direct contact with the agents of van Dijk.

So I expect Liverpool in the next months, to start official negotiations to extend the contract of van Dijk as with Fabinho also we said last week.
