Liverpool duo to be handed contract extensions after UCL final

Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool and Tottenham are set to go head-to-head on Saturday.

The winner of the tie will be champions of Europe and will also see their manager clinch his first piece of silverware at the club.

Both Liverpool and Spurs nearly didn’t make it to the final, with the Premier League outfits having required epic semi-final comebacks.

Liverpool came from 3-0 down to beat FC Barcelona 4-3 while Tottenham also came from three goals down to see off Ajax.

Milner & Matip set for fresh deals

After the tie, the Telegraph is reporting that Liverpool will hand two first-team regulars fresh contracts.

The first of those players is 33-year-old, James Milner. Milner is currently contracted to Liverpool until July 2020.

Despite being 33, Milner is still proving to be a key cog in the Liverpool machine.

The 2018/19 season has seen Milner make an impressive 44 appearances across all competitions, in which he has scored seven and assisted seven.

Milner is also valuable to Liverpool due to his versatility. Just this season he has played centre-mid, left-back and right-back, doing a solid job in every position.

The second of the players reportedly set for a contract extension is Joel Matip.

Like Milner, Matip’s current deal at Anfield runs till the end of the 2019/20 season.

Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 from Bundesliga outfit, Schalke.

The 27-year-old was not featuring too regularly for Liverpool at the start of the 2018/19 campaign.

However, after the unfortunate injury to Joe Gomez, Matip began to earn more first-team chances and he certainly took them.

Matip would help the Reds keep the tightest defence in the Premier League this past season and is now seemingly being rewarded with a contract extension.
