Liverpool could be without Thiago and Alisson for Arsenal clash / Arteta expecting a big challenge

Key absences

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has cast doubt over the fitness of goalkeeper Alisson and new signing Thiago Alcantara.

The pair have reportedly missed training sessions over the last two days. Klopp is therefore being very coy as to whether either will feature versus Arsenal on Monday.

The German coach said: “We will see. We have a few days to train and see how we set up versus Arsenal,”

“I have an idea but why should I make the decision today when we have time before Monday? He (Thiago) is in contention, let’s say.”

It remains unclear what either Alisson or Thiago’s issues are, but, considering Klopp’s lack of concern, it appears likely that neither problem is serious. Fitness may be the only question ahead of the huge clash.

Liverpool’s meeting with Arsenal will see one of the two sides drop their first points of the season, following strong starts.

Arteta’s mentality

Arsenal and Liverpool are actually set to face one another twice in the space of four days in the Premier League and League Cup.

Mikel Arteta was in typically composed mood ahead of the fixtures, though:

“It’s normally difficult enough to play the same team in four days and for the players as well to adapt. The first game has a big impact on the second one and it’s very tough to beat the same opponent twice in that short period,” the Spaniard remarked.

“When you talk about Liverpool that challenge is much bigger. I just want to focus on Monday. Let’s try to get the best possible preparation against them, go there and most importantly have the belief that we can go there and win.”

“We all have to believe we can do that.”

Arsenal have improved massively against high-profile opposition under Arteta. They of course downed Liverpool at the end of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, and in the Community Shield. The northwest club will therefore no doubt want revenge, with a much tougher test set to present itself.
