Liverpool confirm Nat Phillips contract extension, Reds’ plans for Rhys Williams revealed

Phillips signs new deal

On the back of long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Liverpool would look to Nat Phillips to help solver their centre-back crisis.

The 24-year-old signed for Liverpool from Bolton back in 2016 but had only featured once for their senior side before 2020/21.

However, Phillips would go on to notch 20 appearances for the Reds over the course of 2020/21, forming a decent partnership with loanee Ozan Kabak at the back end of the campaign.

But with Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip returning to full fitness and Liverpool signing Ibrahima Konate, there did not look to be much room for Phillips at Anfield.

This would lead to reports earlier in the summer that Newcastle were interested in the stopper and that Liverpool wanted £15m for him.

Now though, Liverpool have confirmed that Phillips has penned a new long-term contract with the club.

After singing his deal, which reportedly runs till 2025, Phillips stated:

“Obviously after last year, it’s really nice to get that reward from the club. I’m happy to be sticking around and being available if the club need to call on me again.

“I’m excited for the next chapter and just to see what that brings.

“It is nice that the club has shown me that recognition and hopefully I can bring more of the same with whatever opportunities come my way.”

Williams to Swansea

With Phillips now looking set to stay put, Liverpool have a mountain of solid centre-back options this season, even when Joel Matip leaves later this seaosn for the African Cup of Nations.

And now, as per the Liverpool Echo, Phillips signing a new deal means the Reds are now poised to give the green light to fellow centre-back Rhys Williams to spend the rest of the season on loan at Swansea.
