Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp provides Virgil van Dijk injury update ahead of Arsenal

Jurgen Klopp has this evening provided a brief update on the wellbeing of Virgil van Dijk, after the stopper was forced off during a friendly meeting with RB Salzburg.

Brewster at the double

Liverpool are of course currently gearing up for the new campaign.

The Reds got their pre-season training camp underway in Austria two weeks ago, as Klopp’s men prepare for the defence of their Premier League title.

This was followed by the club’s first friendly outing over the weekend, a 3-0 victory over Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart.

And the English champions’ busy schedule continued earlier today, as Liverpool faced off with a familiar opponent, in the form of RB Salzburg.

It was the Austrians who emerged from the blocks much the stronger of the two sides, racing out to a two-goal lead inside the opening quarter of an hour courtesy of Patson Daka.

Klopp’s men, though, worked their way back into proceedings, before a late brace from substitute Rhian Brewster secured a share of the spoils for the visitors.

‘No problem’

One concern on an otherwise solid day of pre-season action for Liverpool, however, came 10 minutes into the 2nd-half.

After a coming together left star defender Virgil van Dijk with a nasty cut to his head, the Dutchman was eventually forced to make way for Nathaniel Phillips:

This of course marked a worrying sight for the Reds faithful, ahead of their side’s Community Shield showdown with Arsenal this weekend.

Liverpool’s fans, though, need not fret, with Jurgen Klopp having since provided an update on his defensive leader’s wellbeing.

Speaking in a post-match interview with the club’s official website, the Reds boss confirmed that van Dijk’s injury ‘will not be a problem’ moving forward:

Virg only looks like he has a piercing now and has a plaster on it.’

‘It should not be, and is, no problem. In the moment it is, of course, not cool but there will not be a problem.’
