Liverpool vs Aston Villa
After being beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in the first of two Champions League quarter-final legs, Liverpool’s hopes of securing any form of silverware this season do look to be all but gone.
Their defeat in Spain also now means that their best chance of earning European football next campaign is likely via their league finish.
However, at present, Jurgen Klopp and co. are down in 7th, which may become a Europa League spot at the end of the season but is not quite yet.
So, if the Merseysiders want to play in Europe, they need to bounce back today vs Aston Villa.
Villa have been in slightly patchy form recently, but they did beat Fulham 3-1 last time out.
And though Dean Smith’s side are down in 9th, they are just four points off Liverpool with a game in hand, meaning that if they win said game in hand and beat Liverpool, they would, of course, overtake the Reds – further denting their hopes of finishing in Europe.
Klopp discusses Mane
Ahead of the tie, Jurgen Klopp has been discussing Sadio Mane.
The African is having a decent season overall, but his goalscoring has taken a huge dip in recent months.
Mane has not found the net in the Premier League since the 28th of January during a 3-1 win over Spurs, drawing a blank in his last eight league outings.
Klopp was therefore unsurprisingly drawn on the winger’s struggles in front of goal recently, though the German claimed he was not concerned:
“We all know how good Sadio Mane is, what a player he is and what he did for us. But obviously the numbers scoring-wise are not great at the moment and he knows that.
“For a player with the mindset of Sadio, he wants to do extremely well. But this is the situation he is in. Each striker in the world knows these kind of situations.
“I’m not concerned but I see it as well (that his form isn’t the best), it’s clear. We work on it. It’s the only answer I can give.”
