Liverpool & Arsenal
Here we go again…
The Times on Wednesday have revived a transfer rumour which has been doing the rounds in recent months, linking Liverpool with a possible swoop for an Arsenal star.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Arsene Wenger was pressed to explain Arsenal’s new three at the back formation.
Among the reasons cited for the system change, Wenger noted that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has excelled in the new formation at right wing-back. Indeed, the OX laid on a fine cross for Danny Welbeck last weekend in the 2-0 win over Man United.
But will the Ox be at the Emirates Stadium next season?
The midfielder’s contract expires in 2018, and talks over a new deal have been pushed off until the summer.
So what’s the story?
Liverpool are considering a swoop for the Ox, as follows:
While Oxlade-Chamberlain considers his options, there are other obstacles, not least whether Arsenal would be willing to sell to a rival and what fee they would demand. Liverpool are likely to value him at £20 million.
Liverpool will only be able to press ahead with their preferred transfer plans if they can offer Champions League football, with Virgil van Dijk, the Southampton centre back, a first-choice defensive target.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has played in 44 matches for club and country this season, scoring six goals and chipping in with eight assists in all competitions.
As for Liverpool, aside from the Ox, the Reds have been linked to Mohamed Salah in recent days too.
