Lionel Messi set an unprecedented international record in Argentina’s Copa triumph over Brazil

Argentina and Barcelona icon Lionel Messi last night etched his name ever further into the history books of international football.

Di Maria decides it

The early hours of Saturday morning of course saw Messi and co. return to action, in a Copa America final showdown with arch rivals Brazil.

The Albiceleste headed into proceedings aiming to bring an end to a long and heartbreaking wait for glory in South America, having remarkably not managed to secure the Copa since all the way back in 1993.

When all was said and done at the Maracana, though, clinch the country’s first piece of silverware in almost three decades is precisely what Argentina managed.

A cagey, hard fought spectacle eventually saw a solitary goal separate the nations come the full-time whistle.

After Rodrigo De Paul’s lofted through ball somehow made its way to the feet of Angel Di Maria just beyond the 20-minute mark, the PSG wide-man did superbly to control, before lofting a clever finish over the head of the onrushing Ederson:

The visitors, in turn, stood tall for the ensuing 60 minutes+, sparking a joyous outpour of emotion following the full-time whistle in Rio:

Magical Messi

The night of course proved a special one for all associated with Argentina, but perhaps none more so than aforementioned captain and talisman Lionel Messi.

Barcelona’s veteran attacker has endured an altogether tumultuous international career, having, before last night, fallen to defeat in each of the four showpiece occasions on which he had lined out for the Albiceleste (3 Copa, 1 World Cup).

In righting his record on the international stage, though, Messi did not only add further to his frankly ridiculous CV from a team perspective.

The 34-year-old also secured yet another piece of individual history.

As revealed by his club on Sunday evening, Messi, this summer, became the first player to ever bag the prizes for top scorer, top assist provider, player of the tournament and the title itself in a single international competition:
