Lionel Messi backed to break Dani Alves record by former teammate

Maxwell, former FC Barcelona and PSG left-back, has backed Lionel Messi to break a Dani Alves record.

Alves is currently the most successful player in the history of football, having clinched a record-breaking 42 trophies for club and country during his illustrious career.

However, Maxwell, who played with both Alves and Messi at Barcelona, has backed the latter to break that record.

Owing to Messi’s Copa America victory last summer, the Argentine is currently on 38 trophies secured, and is almost certainly set to clinch another at the end of the season with PSG currently 12 points clear atop Ligue 1.

Of course, with PSG out of the Champions League and Coupe de France, Messi will have to play at least one more season to either match or surpass the benchmark, but Maxwell believes that he can do it:

"He has every chance of breaking the record," the former defender said. "Playing at PSG, he has a great team around him and the possibility to win many more trophies. "Even now, with Dani in Barcelona, Messi has longer to go in his career. We never know how long Dani can go because he keeps pushing himself, but Messi is younger."

PSG vs Marseille

PSG and Messi can take another major step towards the Ligue 1 crown on Sunday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are set to face off with 2nd placed Marseille at the Parc des Princes in a couple of hours' time.

Should PSG win, they will move 15 points clear of Marseille with just six games left to play.
