Leyton Orient vs Spurs postponed / Premier League responds to government decision to delay the return of fans

Carabao Cup live streaming

Leyton Orient were set to play host to Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the Carabao Cup but this has now been called off.

Spurs paid for the Leyton Orient squad and staff to be tested ahead of the fixture. EFL clubs no longer need to conduct weekly tests for their players and staff. Whereas the Premier League still does.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan recently saw a positive test from these mandatory weekly checks.

The number of positive tests accumulated is so far unclear. However, the stadium and training ground are to be closed until further notice.

Further issues arise in regards to a rescheduling. With either Spurs or the O’s to face the winner of Chelsea’s match against Barnsley on the week commencing September 28th.

Spurs’ involvement in Europa League qualification means it could be near impossible to fit in a rearranged date.

Premier League woes

Boris Johnson’s announcement that football clubs would continue to wait to see fans return to their grounds came as a huge financial blow.

It was expected that fans would be able to return to stadiums in a reduced capacity from October 1st. With the number of COVID-19 cases once again rising, the Prime Minister said this would no longer be possible.

“So we will not be able to do this from October 1 and I recognise the implications for our sports clubs which are the life and soul of our communities, and my right honourable friends the Chancellor and the Culture Secretary are working urgently on what we can do now to support them,” Mr Johnson said.

The Premier League has responded frustratingly to the restrictions imposed by the Prime Minister.

“The Premier League notes the government’s announcement today and while the health of the nation must remain everyone’s priority, we are disappointed that the safe return of supporters to matches has been postponed.”

Liverpool fans at Anfield

The statement continued, “The Premier League is certain that, through league-wide guidelines and a code of conduct developed with scientific experts and agreed by the government’s Sports Ground Safety Authority, fans in stadiums will be as safe or even safer than at any other public activity currently permitted. This is already evident in other European leagues.”

The financial impact of a lack of fans was further emphasised. Premier League clubs lost “£700 million” the previous season. Plus, the national game as a whole is losing approximately “£100 million per month.”

Football has seen fans return in the Bundesliga with strict social distancing guidelines enforced across Germany. The Premier League will cite these examples and hope for a rethink.
